Papers, 1897-1973.

The bulk of the collection is a set of file cards documenting the descendants of Stephen Gates of Hingham and Lancaster, Mass., with assigned numbers that conform to Charles O. Gates' book on the family published in 1898, though these cards carry forward to 1943. There are letters dated 1918 to 1919 from Mrs. Gates to her mother describing her husband's appointment to the University of Guelph, finding a house, the Spanish Flu epidemic, and his preparing of an exhibit of bee related products. A second group of letters by Mrs. Gates dated 1963 to 1973 are her reminiscences of the Carpenter family home at Amherst, Mass. There are 138 photographs, ca. 1860-1973, of relatives, mostly Carpenter and Gates, 10 views of ancestral homes, and a 40-page album, 1894-1900. Also, there are bankbooks from Worcester, Mass., 1898-1909, and an autograph album, 1863-1865.
